Everyone has their own favourite version of this wonderful small amplifier, and at the risk of offending some of the tweed fanatics out there, we reckon that with this reissue of the reverb-equipped variant Fender has probably picked the one that’s garnered the most praise over the years.
It combines the classic good looks of the pre-CBS ‘blackface’ with the mis-named Vibrato effect and that great spring reverb. Originally intended as a smaller, more portable combo for practice and beginners, the Princeton Reverb quickly found its true calling in the hands of studio players and, along with the tweed Deluxe, is probably one of the most recorded amps of all time.
Like the original, this re-issue has a smart, perfectly proportioned cabinet covered in thick black Tolex, combined with a silver sparkle grille cloth and black control panel with six skirted control knobs for volume, treble, bass, vibrato speed and intensity and depth for the reverb effect. Construction Also just like the original, this reissue sports a small but solid steel chassis, to which all the valve bases are directly bolted for strength, reliability and easy changeovers.
Inside the chassis, the electronics are all PCB mounted on single-sided boards which are not through-plated – there are two small boards for the input jacks and rotary controls and one large one for everything else, with connections to the valve bases made by short flying leads. This is quite a bit different from the originals, which used eyelet board construction, where components are soldered into small brass rivets which are in turn strategically hammered into a vulcanised fibre baseboard.
This traditional way of building the Fender amplifier survived up until the mid-eighties when the Fullerton production line closed, and is now restricted to Custom Series models like the Tweed Deluxe. The Princeton’s component values appear to be similar, however, the PCB layout is of necessity substantially different from the AA circuit used on original Princetons of this era.
Help dating a silverface Deluxe reverb
It has exactly the same chassis, circuitry and parts for contemporary models of these 2 amp but in a more manageable size and weight package head amp cabinet. That said, the heft of the head unit is still quite substantial, obviously due to the substantially oversized power and output transformers. IMO, the relatively big and heavy power and output transformers together with the solid state rectifier in these amps are the main factors that contribute to the well-known fender clean tone.

Fender ’65 Princeton Reverb Reissue As with Fender’s wonderful Deluxe, the Princeton was one of the very first amps Leo made under his own name – dating all the way back to – and one of the few model names to remain in more or less continuous production, seeing out Fender’s less well-known ‘Ivy League’ amps, the Yale and Harvard.
That amp worked pretty well with my Rick string. That amp turned out to be an early-production Pro-Amp. I started to investigate the world of pre-CBS Fender amplifiers. During that era Fender blackface amps, covered in black tolex with silver grilles, were everywhere. I combed through vintage dealer ads and began to pick up Fender amps in tweed, white, brown and blackface versions, trying to stick to or before.
Some of the amps in my collection have their original tubes, capacitors and speakers; on some they have been replaced. I have presented my amps in rough chronological order by era.

The progress of this type of work is slow, hence the long hiatus, however, a lot of new data have been collected regarding Fender amplifiers, including production numbers. Advances have been made with regards to the production of tolex amps and it appears that much of this information can be applied to late s tweed amps as well. In addition, the dating-by-serial number tables have been revised and are more accurate.
The bad news is that there is still a lot of work that needs to be done on the silverface amps. Unfortunately, there is some sad news to report as well. Fellow Fender amp researcher, Greg Huntington, passed away June 5, after losing his battle with cancer. Greg kept his illness very private, even from this author. His passing is a great loss to this research team and the Fender amp aficionado community in general. Greg was passionate about Fender amps and his knowledge, insight and humor will be missed very much.

What to look for when buying a fender silverface deluxe reverb to avoid a dud?
Well, we’ll get to good parts, but first a little background information is in order. After reading Teagle and Sprung’s excellent Fender amp book, I took them up on their challenge that maybe someday someone will compile enough serial numbers so that Fender amps can be dated that way. So began my quest.

The combination of size, weight and performance makes the Deluxe Reverb a true road warrior on gigs and practise. Since the year we have observed, by monitoring the amp market on US ebay, that low wattage amps have increased dramatically in popularity. We find it irrational. The PA was invented long time before that and guitar tones containing fuzz and distortion have been around since the sixties-seventies.
Why has the desire for low wattage amps with watts of tube power come up so late? Many people consider the silverface amps just as sonically good as the blackface models.

Though Leo Fender and other amp designers of the day had a perception of their amplifiers remaining clean at high volumes, many musicians had other ideas.

The first Fender solidbody model, the Esquire , lasted in name only from June to October This model name was replaced by the “Broadcaster”, which lasted in name only from the October to January All Broadcasters have truss rods, where many Esquires often have no truss rod. In Gretsch had trademarked the name “BroadKaster” for a line of drums. After advertising the Broadcaster in music trade papers in February 20, , Gretsch took notice and sent Fender a telegram asking them to change their name.
Therefore Fender was forced to drop the name Broadcaster.

First, on the Pro Reverb the early silverface AA is not the same circuit as the classic blackface AB , although some later blackfaces may have used the AA circuit and probably did. The circuit was revised again AB , sales starting in early ’69, and again AA with amps hitting the stores in early Next revision AA would have started sales in mid-late or early The next schematic I can find deviates from the traditional numbering series and is designated “F ” and features the master volume, ultralinear transformer, and is rated at 70 watts.
Since this schematic does not adhere to the traditional date-coded series it is difficult to determine exactly when it might have been introduced – the specimen available on the internet bears a hand written notation of ” ?

I would have called it a Custom 22S or something. I like the blade so much more than the rotary. A few clear coat indents or scratches but nothing through to the wood. It plays easily with low action and with the Fralin pickup it has a sweeter selection of single coil tones. Would be very at home in a modern country band or, of course, rock or blues.
